Since 2026, the automotive display sector has witnessed multiple significant technological breakthroughs, with both LED and OLED technological paths advancing simultaneously, presenting novel opportunities and challenges to the optical industry chain.

OLED camp: Large-sized apertures and long lifespan are key breakthroughs

At the Korea International Display Exhibition (K-Display 2026), Samsung Display unveiled the industry's first automotive-grade OLED display with an 80mm aperture. Based on HIAA (Hot Aperture in Active Area) technology, this product expands the aperture size from 5mm in the smartphone era to 80mm, allowing for the direct integration of physical components such as gear shift knobs and air conditioning vents within the display area. Simultaneously, Samsung Display also showcased OLED panels utilizing Flex Chroma Pixel™ technology, covering over 96% of the BT.2020 color gamut and boasting a peak brightness of up to 3000 nits.

LG Display first showcased its third-generation Tandem OLED technology at SID Display Week 2026. The first product designed specifically for automotive applications boasts a brightness of 1200 nits, maintains performance for over 15,000 hours at room temperature without degradation, reduces power consumption by 18% compared to the previous generation, and offers a lifespan that is more than doubled. Samsung Display's LEAD 2.0™ technology, featuring no polarizer OLED, and LG's Tandem technology both point in the same direction - enhancing brightness and reducing power consumption through optical layer optimization.

Mini LED: Accelerated mass production and surging demand for optical films

A certain company has officially mass-produced a 14.6-inch quantum dot Mini LED central control display, which will be equipped on the eighth generation of Hyundai Avante model. This screen adopts a QD Mini LED backlighting solution, with a peak brightness of 1000 nits and a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1. It is noteworthy that the 48-inch Skyline screen of NIO ES9 also adopts a Mini LED backlighting + QD quantum dot film solution, achieving 100% coverage of the DCI-P3 color gamut. QD MiniLED achieves a balance between cost and performance while avoiding the risk of OLED burn-in.

Optical technology: From a supporting role to the center stage

Every leap in display technology is supported by optical materials. In the field of OLED, the OCF (Optical Compensating Film) technology is becoming a key path to reduce power consumption - by eliminating traditional polarizer films, it can reduce power consumption by about 30%. Visionox's COE technology is also based on a polarizer-free architecture, achieving extremely low reflection and high brightness through the precise integration of color filters and anti-reflective coatings.

In the field of Mini LED, Ruifeng Optoelectronics' main product, the COB white light vehicle backlight solution, is paired with 3D microstructure optical technology, effectively suppressing light crosstalk and eliminating halos from the optical bottom layer. Vehicle optical coatings are also undergoing comprehensive upgrades - Furao Optoelectronics' DLC diamond-like multilayer composite superhard coating solution integrates multiple functions such as protection, optics, and anti-fouling, meeting stringent automotive specifications.

The era opportunity for optical enterprises

From the polarizer-free architecture of OLED to the quantum dot film and microstructure optics of Mini LED, and from the optical system of AR-HUD to the holographic display on windshields, optics is evolving from a supporting aspect of the display industry to a core technological barrier. For optical companies, whoever can take the lead in establishing technological advantages in areas such as automotive-grade optical films, precision coating, and microstructure optics will gain an advantage in the wave of intelligent cockpits.
